Ukraine received a $3.9 billion grant from the United States to help the country pay for social programs and other non-military expenditures, Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko said.

"Grant support is extremely important to us as it does not increase Ukraine's debt burden,|Marchenko said in a post on Linkedin. "These funds will be used to compensate social and humanitarian expenditures, including salaries for teachers, emergency workers, and the public sector in general, as well as payments to IDPs (internally displaced people), low-income families, and people with disabilities."

He said direct support from the United States for Ukraine's state budget has now reached $27 billion since the full-scale Russian invasion of February 2022. Those funds are earmarked for humanitarian and social expenses, he said.

In a separate post, on Telegram, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said the grant represents the first tranche of direct budget support from the US.

"In total, Ukraine will receive $7.8 billion in direct budgetary assistance from the United States this year, which will allow us to confidently pass this financial period," he said.
