Explosive weapons leave heavy metals in soil, contaminated groundwater in frontline Ukraine, study finds

The use of explosive weapons in southern regions of Ukraine have caused significant environmental degradation, according to a study by the Conflict and Environment Observatory (CEOBS) and Norwegian People's Aid (NPA).

The study assessed two areas in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions using a combination of remote sensing, field sampling, and community interviews. Soil and water samples were collected from accessible locations that were low-risk, while satellite imagery and open-source data were used for remote analyses.
