Shortly after saying he will not let Ukraine use German weapons in long-range strikes against Russia, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for an intensification of efforts to end the war.
"I believe that now is the moment when we also need to discuss how we can get out of this situation of war faster than the current impression is," Scholz said in an interview with public broadcaster ZDF on Saturday.
The chancellor didn't present a plan for peace in Ukraine but he did say he would suggest Russia attend the next Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland. Russia boycotted the last one, in June, prompting China to do likewise. Brazil, India and South Africa also refused to sign a joint statement at the meeting.
Although no date has yet been set for the next peace summit in Switzerland, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said his country would be ready by November with a plan to end the war.
Also on Saturday, Scholz said at a citizens' dialogue that Germany would not allow Ukraine to use long-range German weapons to hit targets deep inside Russia, according to national newspaper Die Welt.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly asked Western nations to let his military use donated weapons to hit sites deep inside Russia, saying the Russian military is using the sites to launch attacks on Ukraine.
