The 27 foreign affairs ministers of European Union member nations will likely hold their Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Kyiv in early October to show support for Ukraine’s eventual integration into the union, Italian news agency Ansa reported, citing three unnamed sources.
The council, which meets monthly, will discuss Ukraine’s “political integration” as well as increasing military aid for Ukraine and tightening sanctions against Russia, particularly by fighting the evasion of sanctions by Russia’s high-tech sector, Ansa reported.
Ukraine’s candidacy to join the EU is a major component of reconstruction plans for after the war with Russia. Beata Javorcik, the chief economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, recently said in an interview with Reuters that the promise of EU membership will accelerate the reconstruction of Ukraine more reliably than the money likely to be offered by international donors.
